Putting things off to do later is so easy and sometimes happens without us realizing. Until there is a ton of things to do in little to no time; a pile that could have been dealt with sooner. “Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences.” Most people deal with procrastination and it can get to a point where nothing is ever achieved because everything is always put off for a later stage. Procrastinating is a dangerous habit and if it is not dealt with, it can become an addictive reaction to everything.
Hope is not lost!!
Procrastination is not unbeatable, like any other bad habit or addiction, with time and dedication you can overcome this one and never look back. However, Rome was not built in one day; just as your habit of procrastinating was not cultivated overnight, the process to overcome it will not be a quick fix
–but it is not impossible.
There are many ways that one can beat procrastination and the common denominator in all the methods is that you going to have to put in work. Here’s how:
Choose Your First Battle
The hardest things about overcoming a bad habit is the first step. This is why it is important to pick a battle you will fight, then the next and so on. Do not overwhelm yourself with 10 things to do at once because you will not make any progress. Rather choose one task that will push you or motivate you to start and finish. This will be the first step of many, once you fall into a rhythm, you will be able to find balance in your life again.
Start Now, Start Today:
Delete the statements, “I will do it later”, and “I will do it tomorrow.” If there is nothing stopping you from doing it today, why put it off. By postponing, you are creating a pattern of no productivity and no progress. So, no matter how hard, start now, start today.
Create a Schedule and Stick to It:
Set apart time dedicated to productive work in your daily schedule. Even when you have no assignments or studying to do, commit to those scheduled times and do something productive in those hours. Do not skip the time you set aside to work, skipping once means skipping again and again. Be faithful to yourself and your tasks; the feeling of satisfaction after completing all your work will be worth it.
Get A Work Buddy:
Accountability makes it difficult to procrastinate. Pair yourself with someone that you will not only be accountable to for how you spend your days, but someone who is ab to motivate you to keep pushing even when it gets gloomy. Having a support system has a huge impact when it comes to overcoming anything. Your Buddy should be someone you respect and trust, otherwise, the buddy system won’t work.
Reward Yourself:
One way to make completing your work or tasks fun is to give yourself a reward for a job well done. You will be more motivated and inclined to finish if there is something to look forward to at the end of the day. Whether it is for an episode of your favorite show, or a sugary treat work hard so that your reward is more enjoyable. There are many more ways that can be listed on how to beat procrastination, however, the point still remains the same; start and don’t look back.
